3/4 of a century. Never thought I would make that, when old was 65 young.
Brings back memories. Remember when we could smell the summer heat, something to do with the drying wheat fields and weeds in the bar ditch, 95 degrees on a summer day. Fresh rain had a special reviving smell to it. Can not forget to mention the smell of freshly plowed field too, just the earthly smell. We three grew up with all the best necessities, cistern for water, outhouse for necessities, grand baths in a #2 wash tub, summer on the cellar door warming up and winter in the kitchen. Oh yes we had electric lights REA you know, always first to go out in an electric storm. Replace the fuse on the transformer just out side my window. Telephone, 3 longs and 1 short, 10 party line. Mom learned to talk in “code” to our friends. Always a monitor on the line. By the way, telephone line was the best to see the scissortails on the highline wires just outside my window. Loved the evening sound of doves too. Their cooing was a special treat. You could always talk to the quail too, just whistle “bob-white” a couple of times. Air condition was to move bedding to the front porch for the night. Radio was entertainment, Bobby Benton and the B-Bar-B, Gun Smoke, Green Hornet and Sunday funnies read to you over the radio too. 10 cent sliced bread, 19 cent regular gas and you had a choice of Ethel too.
Everyone was PC correct and did not know it.
Ah the lazy days of summer in Oklahoma along the Red River.
We were blessed with so little but did not know it.
